Equity indices edged lower dragged by metal, auto and IT stocks, heightened selling pressure and volatility.

Sensex traded 255.89 pts or 0.31 per cent lower at 81,377.13 as at 12.29 pm, and Nifty 50 was down 79.85 pts or 0.32 per cent to 24,753.75. India VIX declined 1.73 per cent to 16.14, while both midcap and smallcap indexes traded with marginal loss.

The majority of sectoral indices traded in negative territory, except PSU bank. Metal index fell over 1 per cent. Auto and IT slipped 0.97 per cent and 0.73 per cent, respectively. Defence, healthcare, banking stocks also delivered resilience.

Top gainers & losers intraday

Shares of Eternal/ Zomato led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, with over 3 per cent increase at the time of writing. Apollo Hospitals, Larsen & Turbo, Cipla and Bajaj Finserv followed with marginal gains.

On the flip side, Bajaj Auto fell nearly 3 per cent post Q4 results. Hindalco also followed with 2 per cent decline. Shriram Finance, NTPC nad Tata Motors also dragged by over 1 per cent.

Nearly 1,560 stocks declined and only 1,138 advanced of all the 2,782 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange. About 51 stocks hit 52-week high including Bharat Dynamics, BSE, DCB Bank, Reliance Power and Apollo Micro, and 18 stocks hit 52-week low.

77 shares including Senco Gold and Dhanlaxmi Bank hit the upper circuit, while 51 stocks such as ITI, Nibe, JNK India, Coffee Day hit the lower circuit.

Suzlon, BSE, Muthoot Finance, Cummins India and BDL soared 4-8 per cent among midcap, while Reliance Power, Godfrey Phillips, Manappuram, Nuvama and Aster DM surged among smallcap.

Top losers of nifty metal index included: Vedanta, NMDC, Hindalco and Hindustan Copper.

On the BSE, Gujarat Pipavav Port rallied 11 per cent.

Shares of Ola Electric,Mazagon Dock, SJVN tumbled 4-6 per cent post Q4 results. Suzlon Energy, Lumax Auto, Sobha, ICRA shares reacted positively to Q4 numbers.
