Share Market Highlights 9 May 2025: War fears hit Dalal Street: Sensex sinks 880 points, Nifty down 265

Sensex, Nifty updates on 9 May 2025: Stock markets plunged over 1% on Friday amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, sparking fears of a prolonged conflict. The BSE Sensex fell 880 points to 79,454.47, while the NSE Nifty declined 266 points to 24,008. The drop followed India’s successful interception of fresh Pakistani drone and missile strikes in Jammu and Pathankot, a day after launching ‘Operation Sindoor’ targeting terror sites in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Analysts noted that while conflict was expected, markets were not prepared for the situation to escalate. Despite geopolitical jitters, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net buyers, investing ₹2,008 crore on Thursday. Among Sensex stocks, ICICI Bank, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, and Reliance were top losers. However, Titan surged over 4% on strong Q4 earnings, and L&T jumped nearly 4% on a 25% PAT rise. Tata Motors, SBI, and Asian Paints also ended in the green, providing some support to the otherwise weak market sentiment. Of the 4,010 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,366 advanced, 2,488 declined, and 156 remained unchanged. Meanwhile, 52 stocks touched a 52-week high and 190 hit a 52-week low. A total of 119 stocks hit the upper circuit, while 299 hit the lower circuit.

Stock market live updates today: Mr. Prasanna Pathak, Managing Partner, The Wealth Company, market comments

“When geopolitical tensions rise, the financial markets tend to react negatively due to increased uncertainty, risk aversion, and the potential for economic disruptions. The equity markets in India till now has been uncharacteristically calm and resilient. This might be indicative of the strong position that India is in and the diplomacy and global support that we have been able to garner so-far.

If matter escalates, we might see a knee-jerk reaction in the markets, particularly in sectors like aviation, tourism, financials, and infrastructure. Rupee might depreciate in the short term and crude oil prices might move up.

Structurally, we believe that India is much better placed relatively economically in the midst of tariff uncertainty as well as geopolitical tensions in the short-term.

Mutual Fund investors should stay invested as well as continue their SIP’s. However, If one is close to a financial goal, consider shifting from equity to debt funds for capital protection.

Direct equity investors should trim their exposure to high-beta stocks and avoid speculation.

A disciplined and diversified approach, along with a long-term view, is the best defense against such uncertainty.”

Stock market live updates today: Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities, on market sentiment

Yesterday’s last hour selling in the Nifty was proof that the markets are getting jittery about the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan. The India VIX jumped 10% and marked its seventh straight gain, which means people are buying portfolio protection. The selling inflicted some short-term damage by sending the nifty below 24200 on an intraday basis, but the big level bulls need to protect is 24,000 and then the critical 23872. On the upside, the near-term bias will turn bullish only on a break of the 24450 - 24589 zone. The gift nifty opened nearly 350 points down but half an hour into trade had recovered somewhat, so we should brace for volatility when the cash market opens.

Stock market live updates today: MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (PTI)

🔥MEA Press Briefing on Operation Sindoor: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri (VikramMisri) says, “First of all, there is mention on all sides of escalation. I think the first point that you have to keep in mind is that the attack in Pahalgam on April 22 was the original escalation, and the Indian Armed Forces only replied to that escalation on May 7. Secondly, I want to invite your attention to the involvement of the group called The Resistance Front in this attack. I pointed this out yesterday that this a group that is a known front for a well-known Pakistan-based organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. The group has been reported earlier.”

🔥MEA Press Briefing on Operation Sindoor: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri (VikramMisri) says, “India’s response is non-escalatory, precious and considered. Our intention has not been to escalate matters and we are responding only to the original escalation, and only terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan has been hit.”

🔥MEA Press Briefing on Operation Sindoor: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri (VikramMisri) says, “Pakistan is trying to wash its hands from any and all involvement with terrorism. Pakistani information minister said there are no terrorists in Pakistan, and I think he was challenged in that TV programme that he was appearing on. Pakistan’s reputation as epicentre of global terrorism is rooted in a number of instances where concrete evidence is available not just to India but governments and authorities around the world.”

🔥MEA Press Briefing on OperationSindoor: When asked about the press release issued earlier today stating that India has successfully targeted the air defence systems in Lahore—and whether this gives Indian forces an advantage in the event of further escalation, as well as whether any other air defence sites were also targeted, Foreign Secretary Misri responded, “This is a constantly evolving situation. The press release issued by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) speaks for itself. It pertains to operational matters. As more information becomes available, it will be shared at an appropriate time.”
